About Crown Oil

Our mission: To become a Net Zero company by 2030 (Scope 1 & 2 emissions)

Established in 1947, Crown Oil has grown to become one of the UK’s largest oil, fuel and lubricant suppliers. We operate from our main base, the Oil Centre in Bury, Lancashire, and have oil distribution depots across the UK, including in Doncaster, Birmingham and London.

Countries, businesses and individuals are all part of a national and global economic system that is heavily reliant on fossil fuel extraction, processing and consumption. Within the oil products industry, downstream distribution providers, such as Crown Oil, are at the end of the supply chain, playing a small but significant role in the overall journey from its source to the end-user, otherwise known as ‘well to tank’.

We recognise the environmental impact of fossil fuel use on a local and global scale, and due to our first-hand relationship with our valued customers, we understand how deeply dependent society is today on oil-based products for daily life. However, we are acutely aware that this is not an excuse for inaction but rather a growing opportunity to make positive changes in every way we can.

As society makes the difficult transition to a net-zero carbon world, Crown Oil is passionate about evolving to serve our customers with the lowest possible environmental impact now and into the future.

The Crown Group is the first UK fuel company to be certified carbon neutral

Becoming carbon neutral requires a business to balance its carbon emissions with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset. Alternatively, it can purchase enough carbon credits to make up the difference between its emissions and a zero-carbon baseline.

We are certified carbon neutral by switching our entire delivery fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and offsetting all emissions across the Group by using a certified offsetting company.

Our next major milestone?

Being a safe and sustainable business is at the heart of our growth strategy and is essential for the future of our employees, our customers and our communities. This involves understanding and managing the impact on the community we operate in whilst working with our customers to support their ESG and CSR targets. Our next milestone is to have net zero direct emissions by 2030 or sooner.

Our commitments

Maintain carbon neutral status in line with PAS 2060 – We will continue to reduce our emissions, run our fleet on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO fuel) and offset any unavoidable emissions to maintain our carbon neutral status

Publicly share methodology and approach – Continually update our website with details on how we’re reducing our environmental impact to ensure full public disclosure and transparency

Achieve net zero direct emissions by 2030 – Our aim is to achieve Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions. With our detailed strategy in place, we are committed to ensuring we’re on track.

80% Scope 1 and 2 reductions by 25% against 2020 baseline

90% Scope 1 and 2 reductions by 2028

2030 Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions

These 3 target areas will be reviewed by directors and stakeholders to ensure necessary commitment, resources and funding are in place prior to any public statements or communications.

We practice what we preach

We can’t expect our customers to make a change without leading by example. That’s why in 2021, we became the first fuel supply companies in the UK to run our entire delivery fleet on HVO. This move will save on average 3,000 tonnes of net CO2 every year!
